What Is Loofah?

The Loofah is an all year-round climbing plant with beautiful yellow flowers. Its fruits are cylindrical and during ripening the interior is transformed into a dense network of fibers somewhat like a mesh. It is the only plant known that can be raised and used as a sponge.

Loofah products are very versatile in that they can be used for bathing and household use. A distant cousin of the cucumber the loofah is harvested in late spring and has a preference for the warmer climate.

The popularity of loofah for personal hygiene products is due to the gentle exfoliating effect the fibres have on the skin. It deep cleanses and conditions your skin naturally. Many environmentally conscious consumers appreciate that loofah products are biodegradable, 100% natural and a renewable resource

"Rub Your Skin Up The Right Way" with an Egyptian Loofah

There are 2 types of loofah, Egyptian Loofah (Luffa Aegyptiaca) and Asian Loofah (Luffa Acutangula), which are vastly different in terms of texture and resilience.

The differences are as follows:

Egyptian Loofah (Luffa Aegyptiaca)Asian Loofah (Luffa Acutangula)
Softer & More Resilient.Harsh & Abrasive.
Thick & Fibrous instantly soft.Uncomfortable to use and takes time to wear in.

Lasts longer, due to the even distribution of fibres.

Excessive use makes it prone to splitting due to coarser fibres.
Whiter in colour & is chemical free.Grey in colour and requires bleaching usually with chlorine or, soda solutions which erodes the fibres.
